James Gurney

Presenting
James Gurney dropped out of art school to ride the rails across America, which resulted in "The Artist's Guide to Sketching." He worked as a background painter for the Ralph Bakshi / Frank Frazetta animated film "Fire and Ice." He wrote and illustrated the Dinotopia series, painted the "World of Dinosaurs stamps" for the U.S. Postal Service and illustrated over a dozen assignments for National Geographic magazine. He's had over 35 solo exhibitions in museums such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Norman Rockwell Museum, and the Norton Museum of Art. His books, "Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter" and "Imaginative Realism: How to Paint What Doesn't Exist" have sold over 350k copies and have been translated into a bunch of languages. James Gurney, author of the Amazon bestseller "Color and Light" takes you through his explorations of lighting via his plein-air paintings in gouache and oil and his experiments with 'concepting from life.'

Colossal Characters: Live Plein Air Painting

Pasadena City Hall (100 Garfield Ave) | James Gurney, Marco Bucci, Angela Sung x Warrior Painters, Gary Geraths, Michelle Lin

To kick off LightBox Expo 2023, artist and author James Gurney (Dinotopia) and friends present a live 'plein air' painting event in front of the iconic Pasadena City Hall. Equipped with their sketchbooks, 12 professional artists wearing orange caps will lead the art event, where artists will draw or paint on location while imagining a giant character visiting Pasadena. The character can come from animation, movies, video games, or comics. The interaction between the character and Pasadena can be anything from playful to apocalyptic. Any artist is welcome to join! Each participant should bring their own materials, including a toy or figurine for reference. Each participant receives an official button. The mentors include James Gurney, Marco Bucci, Gary Geraths, Angela Sung, Michelle Lin, four concept artists from Blizzard, and more! We hope to see you there!
